Before you go any further with other kernels, let me do some tinkering to
see if I can recreate the problem and find a fix. It could be that in
version 2.0 the options for compiling the drivers need to be modified to
work with a broader range of computers.

I am assuming that you are on a fairly standard Intel or AMD machine with a
standard serial port.
